I didn't realize how much I needed her until she was there. Cat was worth her weight in gold. - Gina
Cat started her doula journey in 2011 when she was pregnant with her son, Connor. Knowing that she wanted to try for a natural birth with no unnecessary medical intervention, she began researching the different offerings there were for birthing choices. After taking Bradley Method classes with her husband, Paul, and ultimately being transformed by having the birth of her dreams, she knew that she wanted to help other women have the type of birth they desire. She decided as they brought their new bundle home from the hospital that she wanted to become a doula and childbirth educator.
Certified through DONA International, she uses her Masters degree in Early Childhood Education and Human Development and background in education coupled with a passion for birth to deliver high quality instruction and support to you regarding your pregnancy, labor and delivery. Together, she helps you to create a safe environment that continuously involves informed consent that you can bring with you anywhere, whether you are choosing to birth in the hospital, in a birth center, or at home.
It has been proven that the presence of a doula has positive outcomes on the birthing experience, regardless of how a birth unfolds. Women who use doulas have a better understanding of birth and are more informed, providing a better birth experience for them. Cat's unique philosophy, that you can read more about by clicking here, provides her clients with an anchor during their pregnancy, their labor, and after birth.
As your doula, Cat is a part of your birth team. She does not replace your partner or any other member. She, instead, adds to your team to provide emotional, physical, and informational support throughout your pregnancy and labor to you and your loved ones. With your doctor or midwife responsible for making sure your baby has a healthy and safe transition from the womb, Cat is there to serve as a consistent touchstone and resource for all the emotional, physical, and educational needs that may arise.
Throughout the 28 hours Cat spent with us in labor and delivery, from the earliest contractions, through the first breastfeeding, she was a calm, reassuring, consistent, alert presence. At every decision-making crossroads, Cat shared her knowledge and helped us discuss our options. She equipped us to make our own informed decisions, allowing us to never feel pressured to adhere to a particular agenda. - Stephanie and Bryce
The birthing woman is the captain that drives the process with the support of her team. There are doulas who believe that the only way to have a positive birth experience is without intervention, such as an epidural. Although I do believe that following a natural birth process is beneficial for both mom and baby, what is most important to me as your doula is that you have the birth you want, even if that includes pain management medication.
"I knew that with twins I wanted to deliver in a hospital with an epidural but I wasn’t sure if there was a place for a doula where medical interventions were involved. Cat reassured me that her goal was to make my labor and delivery what I envisioned. This included educating me in the different types of interventions, aiding me in my decision-making before and during the birth, and supporting me through the interventions I chose for myself. This put me at ease and kept me very open to receiving care from Cat during my entire prenatal and postpartum experience." - Julia E., Twin Mom
