As we stay along the path of the BBB series, our next Guest Stars are Dory and Matt and the birth of their beautiful daughter Liesel Jane. The power in Liesel’s delivery room was monumental. Between the strong, patient presence that Matt showed, the revelant peace Dory’s mother brought to the team, and Dory’s own solid determination, the birth of Liesel Jane was one for the record books for sure.
It gives me great pleasure to now turn to story of Liesel Jane’s birth as seen through her mother’s eyes.
We went for a hike on a beautiful Saturday morning. As my sister dragged my mom, son, husband and myself through the woods when the bulge in front of me finally gave in. While everyone went up a steep incline to the water fall, I rested and it became apparent that would be the last time her and I would be alone for a while.
That afternoon, I went to use the restroom and it seemed clear my labor was beginning. I called Cat to talk about my options and then proceeded to call my midwife M. Contractions hadn’t begun yet so we talked out a plan and I tried some techniques Cat suggested in order to get them started. After a couple rounds of exercises and stretches... it was clear my baby wasn’t quite ready. After negotiating a time to go to the hospital with my midwife, my husband, Matt, and I ended up at Virginia Hospital Center around 1:00 AM.
Throughout this time, I recalled the birth of my son in 2012, which was a difficult experience. It was because of that experience I knew I wanted control going into this birth. Consequently, Matt and I took Bradley Method classes and hired Cat to prepared for this moment so that we would be proud of our experience this time.
When we got to the hospital there was a lot of confusion over if my water actually broke. After semi-confirmation, and the acknowledgement that contractions still hadn’t picked up, we agreed on a slow drip of pitocin to get things going. Cat and my midwife worked together beautifully in order to slowly introduce the pitocin in a manner that was bearable. Eventually, through movement and slight intervention my labor was in full swing. Matt was my guiding force throughout my labor. His simple presence during all the contractions is what kept me strong. He knew I could do it...and that was all that I needed.
After my fore waters had broken, the contractions began to cluster, and it was getting harder and harder to keep my composure. I was moaning, yelling, and doing anything (I didn’t think I would) to release the pain. Right when I thought I couldn’t handle another contraction, Cat said something I will never forget. She told me to prepare for each contraction. That helped to maintain my focus and work with body. Then, the magical moment came when Cat told me I was at the hardest point in labor. I remembered my relief when I heard her. nNot much more to go. I could do this!
Getting to 10 cm was the trickiest part. I wanted it more than my body did and I stalled. After some attempts to maneuver, it came down to pure relaxation. I walked a little bit, changed positions, and finally I was ready to push! I remember myself overcome with power and the instant feeling of determination. It was like being awakened from a trance when that moment came. I remember straightening up and saying “Oh! I can DO this!”
After pushing for a bit, there came a moment of silence which all mothers fear. My baby’s precious shoulder was stuck and it took all I had not to push and follow what M was saying to me for my baby’s safety. Still, with Matt, Cat, and my mom by my side, I had an overwhelming peace. I knew my baby would be fine. M was quick and maneuvered my baby with what seemed like ease. All was well upon delivery.
Liesel Jane was born at 2:14pm. 9 lbs 7 onces of pure beauty. Holding her with her brother was the most rewarding part of the delivery. It was an amazing experience...one I will always look back on and remember how much support, love, and strength was in that room that day.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIESEL!!!!! You are so loved!!
