Over the past two weeks as we have experienced a significant adjustment in schedules and responsibilities with many schools closing, locations where adult classes are held closing, gatherings being limited and halted all together, support people and visitors being separated from their loves ones while in labor and birthing...
I along with many other educators have taken the reigns to figure out what we can do to provide safety, calm, comfort, and empowerment during the COVID-19 crisis. Many childbirth educators and doulas have begin to switch to online streaming and online platforms since we know, as do laboring people and their partners everywhere the benefits of birth classes.
Thank goodness I work for Evidence Based Birth® and was able to be on the ground floor of getting the full series up online while maintaining the interactive quality of our class. Our fearless leader, Dr. Rebecca Dekker saw this crisis coming and we hopped on a call together and decided to get the Evidence Based Birth® Childbirth Class fully available online right away. I also was able to set up live streaming and online components for all my other birth and postpartum classes - Labor of Love, Demystifying Your Hospital Birth, Path to Parenthood - that are not just the pregnant mama and her partner looking at screen.
NO ma'am and sir.
Through the online streaming and online classes, Birth Freely is still able to give you community, empowerment, mentorship, and live assistance in your class. So instead of staring at a computer screen, talk to me! Ask me questions! Let me point out where to place your hands for counter pressure, where and how to massage, how to breath and maintain calm during labor for both the laboring person and her partner. Let's role play advocacy scenarios so that you get the information you need and so you have your best birth.
Can you do this without a birth class? Sure. But do you want you want to? Check out this pdf about why birth classes are important. Why they can actually be necessary to reduce your fear and empower you beyond that scary birth story you heard from your friend. This experience WILL transform you. Take a class with Birth Freely and let it transform you for the better.
If your class was canceled, you can sign up now. If you want to social distance, you can sign up now. If you are pregnant due in the summer, sign up for the virtual experience and we can transfer your ticket to the in person class when we are all back in action after the crisis is over. *The ticket transfers will be first come, first served since we can only accommodate so many people in the classroom comfortably.
What are you waiting for? Learn from your own home with your personal mentor, your personal expert, right there to help you. Check out the classes being offered via live stream now.

Are you a doula in the Southern NJ or Philadelphia Region? The doulas in my Birth Freely Doula Mentorship Program and birth workers in maternal rights groups have been chatting the past couple days about what public health officials might be deciding for doula support in the hospital setting amidst the COVID-19 cases that have been turning up in our region. I am happy to report that I have not heard about any local hospitals restricting doulas in the labor room as of yet but still I do believe this is coming. Please know that the organizations that govern hospitals typically stand on the side of doula support and not restricting laboring people's access to doulas, however hospitals have the rights to make up their own policies surrounding what they feel is best for public health.
Still, consumers have the right to advocate for doula presence.
Please see this statement from AWHONN on doula support during COVID-19 that was rebased on March 11, 2020. They are standing behind doulas. This document is that update that I am encouraging all doulas have on their persons when they are heading to a birth.
Thank you, AWHONN, for backing us! This truly is a big deal and we are grateful!
Doulas, if you do get stopped from entering or asked to leave the room, here are some pointers:
Birthing People - Make a plan with your doula! Role play it! Read the statement from AWHONN and remind yourselves why you hired your doula. If it makes you uncomfortable to advocate for your doula, know that she will do her best to be in that room but your rights are the rights that matter.
